WIZARD OF OZ 50TH BIRTHDAY PARTY

Add caption
My brother celebrated his 50th Birthday and since we did an Alice In Wonderland Themed party for my other brother ,who is an artist, we decided we should do a themed one for this brother as well!  We decided on Wizard Of Oz, it being a classic, lots of great characters and quotes, a good message to the story, some quirky characters, lots of color and something we all grew up watching. We made costumes for the main characters and put on a skit for our guests, served a down on the farm home- cooked meal and a rainbow of desserts. Had some games planned but didn't end up doing them at the last minute.  Some ideas though are:  Try to throw the ring on the witches hat, pin the heart on the tin man, a brain teaser game, a game of courage, water balloon toss with rainbow colored balloons titled "I'm melting" or you can throw them at the witch and try to hit her - ha ha, and fortunes presented by the Professor Marvel from his crystal ball.  Hope you enjoy the pictures and get some inspiration of your own!

Our Candy Buffet - Taste the Rainbow
purple lollipop in background is made with a balloon.

front door sign

ruby slippers

Our menu - home cooking like down on Auntie Em's farm

fried chicken disguised as flying monkey wings- ha ha

sun flower seeds to munch on from the
Scarecrow's garden

Tin Man heart cookies - marzipan homemade cookies-
used a miniature heart cookie cutter for the shape.
Just a basic marzipan cookie recipe. I chilled the
dough in the freezer about 1/2 hr and then baked.
I put some cake coloring mixed in sugar and put
that on top of some of the hearts before
baking them.  The dough is just colored with
red cake coloring also.
Lions and Tigers and Bears Oh My
animal graham crackers

The Invitation - Says "Stop partying? When Monkeys
fly!.  The red shoes on the envelope say 'There's no
place like home'. I put red glitter on them also.

Little red shoe that I found. I just added some glitter and a bow!

Yellow Brick Road sign is just a paper cutout attached
to cardboard.

Just printed this from the internet and then
added the words "is 50" - My brother who's
birthday it was played the part of the
Scarecrow

printed this out and added the words down
the sides

The Emerald City is the Wizard of Oz pop up book
that you can order.

A stuffed animal that my niece had and an old picture that
my mom had to represent "Auntie Em"

We painted a horse to represent the horse of a
different color from the Emerald City

A heart my sister made for the tin man.

Just some old shutters and bricks, made legs
and added stockings and shoes!

My brother made this huge sign out of wood and painted
the lettering for Professor Marvel's area.

Made a hot air balloon from a paper lantern, attached a
basket and added plastic toy people.

Made poppies out of tissue paper. Just cut
paper into squares, pull together in the
middle and attach a green stem.  Sign made
from a piece of wood says "Beware of
Poppies, they cause drowsiness". Underneath
it says 'Poppy Field - for those who prefer
sleep over partying'

Plastic tablecloths add a rainbow effect.  Balloons blown up
tied together with a smaller balloon in the center make
large flowers. Just attach with a string to a long stick. Can
find a more detailed version on the website.

A metal flower my mom had.  Just added a wooden Kansas
sign.

We attached a deflated large paper lantern
to the ceiling that we had wrapped thin
black material around. We kind of twisted it
and made a tornado twister for the top
of the cake!

Just bought a plain white cake and added blackberries, and our
own paper cutouts to the top and around the bottom.
Then just sat the bottom of the twister on top of the cake.

Cutout is of a scarecrow with crows on him holding signs.
One says "Don't go towards the light!" and the other one
says "Yep, you're old, Get over it!" The candle is a black
5-0. We couldn't find black so we painted them.

Yellow brick road section we made from cardboard
and yellow construction paper.

yellow brick road entrance to Oz made out'
of painted cardboard.  Emerald City sign
put in an old frame. We had a rusty old
bell we put above it for the doorbell, and
we made a cardboard sign that said
"Bell out of order, Please knock"

We didn't know what to do for the background for
Emerald City and my brother thought of using green
pool floats. We had some green bubble wrap we found
that someone was discarding and so used that too.
If  you were having it at night you could also add
mini green lights or green glow sticks for a nice
effect. Also a lit torch for the wizard.

For the Haunted Forest

For the Witch Castle.

My mom played the witch.  Just an old
halloween cape and hat, green gloves,
green face paint and a black dress.
The crystal ball is a halloween crystal
ball that we already had.

The Lullaby League Munchkins! They were so
cute and funny!  They did their lines and
sang their song!  Dresses were made out
of shimmering pink material for the skirts
and tops.  My mom did an amazing job
with the cute little hats!  We added pink
tulle to the skirts also.  They didn't have
ballet slippers so wore footie socks and
attached silk ribbon.

Our Coroner just wore a black raincoat
and a black felt hat.  We made him a
death certificate out of paper that he
unrolled and read his lines from.

We only had one boy for the lollipop
guild so the girls joined in with him

Our apple tree that talks!

Dorothy.  Homemade costume and red glittered slippers.

My brother, the Scarecrow.  homemade costume also
stuffed with straw.

Our Lion wore fuzzy house shoes, just a
brown top and pants, a mane made out of
yarn like stuff, ears sewn on a headband
and a tail made our of material.

Our Tin Man had a suit we made from
silver material. We found a large funnel
and just painted it silver.  We used
a real axe for him to hold.

Our Good Witch of the North wore a pink tulle skirt and top
that we attached sparkly tulle puffy sleeves to. The crown
and magic wand were home made too out of sparkly
paper and cardboard. She wore a fancy piece of
jewelry that we had, around her neck, a a pair of
silver shoes.

Sign we had on the door.

Another sign we had on the front door.

Refrigerator magnets that were made with Wizard of Oz
pictures in them.

Our farm table - a basket of apples and ball mason jars
for the silverware.  We had poppy napkins, red checked
plates and red cups.

Made from a cardboard box we found. There
were ropes to hang on to the balloons but
among all the last minute confusion for
some reason they didn't get attached!
Also we had trouble getting helium that day.
The party store was out of it! We really
needed lots more balloons , but you
get the idea of what you can do.

  2. Thanks so much for your nice comment. It was work but also a lot of fun! We saved a lot of money on costumes since my mom is a great seamstress! We made up scripts and re-enacted parts of the movie for the guests. Everyone had a great time. Good luck with your party!

  3. Woah! This can’t get any better. I mean, everything is fantabulous, I am literally out of words. Loved the flying monkey wings and tin man heart idea a lot. It actually looked like we are some place scary. I am definitely going to pick up some ideas to decorate the convention center for my son’s birthday party.
